The Story of Fiona

For PEI, Hurricane Fiona in 2022 seems to be a bad joke, more like a "big gift" imposed on us, we are nervous, helpless, we accept and calm, we rediscover and find surprises. All of this is a fascinating story, and today Liu Xin uses his paintings to show his story and Fiona's story, and maybe it's also your story and mine.

From Fiona, other works began:

  • Jieqi’s Dragon

  • Hockey Series

  • Blue Series

Hurricane Fiona, September 2022 I arrived on Prince Edward Island less than a month before the storm. This project began that night.

P.O.T.S: Never Stop

P.O.T.S – Never Stop was a solo exhibition by Leo , presented at The Guild in 2024. Through painting, installation, photographic documentation, and artist-designed postage stamps, the exhibition explored his observations and experiences after moving from China to Prince Edward Island. It reflected on themes of land, migration, natural disaster, memory, and the process of building a new life.

The title P.O.T.S is created by rearranging the letters of the word “STOP.” This transformation expresses the central idea of Never Stop: never stop observing, creating, moving, communicating, or reconsidering the relationship between art and life.

Leo‘s Solo Exhibition of summer 2024

Desire Paths marked Leo (Xin) Liu’s first participation in a professional group exhibition within Prince Edward Island’s local arts community, presenting his practice through the language of contemporary Chinese ink painting.

Organized by This Town Is Small (TTIS), the professionally paid exhibition brought together twelve Epekwitk/PEI-based artists at the Hilda Woolnough Gallery in Charlottetown from November 14 to December 19, 2024. Liu exhibited Memories Along the Way, an ink-and-wash work exploring movement, memory, endurance, and the ambiguous state of life. The exhibition also included a public Art Night tour, artist discussions, and a hands-on workshop.

Monthly Group Exhibitions at Breadalbane Gallery

Since 2023, Leo (Xin) Liu has participated regularly in monthly group exhibitions at Breadalbane Gallery, Prince Edward Island. This ongoing exhibition relationship has provided him with a consistent local platform for presenting the development of his practice across painting, contemporary Chinese ink, printmaking, and experimental mixed media.

Rather than a single exhibition experience, Breadalbane has become a sustained space for artistic experimentation, dialogue, and connection with PEI’s local arts community. This long-term relationship also led to Leo’s solo presentation, Fans, at the gallery in 2025.

Since 2023

Fanatics was a 2026 thematic group exhibition presented by the Peake Street Collective through This Town Is Small (TTIS). Held at The Arts Guild in Charlottetown from April 16 to May 23, the exhibition invited artists to explore their personal passions, obsessions, fascinations, and private devotions.

Leo (Xin) Liu presented Blue Hockey: The Laocoön Moment, a cyanotype work depicting an instant of pain, struggle, and physical entanglement during an ice hockey game. By connecting the intensity of hockey with the emotional and bodily tension suggested by Laocoön, the work transforms a moment of athletic collision into an image of human resistance and vulnerability. The exhibition marked a further development of Liu’s participation in the local PEI arts community and of Blue Hockey as a visual language shaped by his life in Canada.
